Did-ya know?

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Breast cancer is the most common cancer among women in the United States, other than skin cancer. It is the second leading cause of cancer death in women, after lung cancer. About 182,460 women in the United States will be found to have invasive breast cancer in 2008. Strongly encourage (remind) every woman you know that is 40 and older to have a screening mammogram every year and should continue to do so for as long as they are in good health. While mammograms can miss some cancers, they are still a very good way to find breast cancer. Women in their 20s and 30s should have a clinical breast exam as part of a regular exam by a health expert, at least every 3 years.

Men can get breast cancer too. The American Cancer Society estimates that in 2008 about 1,990 new cases of invasive breast cancer will be diagnosed among men in the United States.

Early detection in both cases improves the chances that breast cancer can be treated successfully.
